Peter Dykes, born in North Yorkshire, studied oboe under Stephane Rancourt and Stephen West at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, graduating in 2000. During his time in Scotland, he made regular guest appearances with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Peter was also a member of the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, touring extensively in Europe and America, and has made concerto performances with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the European Union Chamber Orchestra.
For three years he held the position of solo oboe in the Slovenia National Theatre Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and has also played with the Slovenia Radio Television Symphony Orchestra and Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2003, he was appointed to the position of Principal Oboe with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, where he was also oboe professor at the University of Canterbury and the Pettman Junior Academy of Music.
In 2010 Peter moved to Wellington to take up the position of Associate Principal Oboe with the NZSO. He is also a member of the Wellington contemporary music group Stroma.
In July 2017 Peter was appointed Associate Principal Oboe with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, so he and his wife, Jill, moved back to Glasgow! He is also an oboe teacher at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Away from the oboe, Peter is a junior football coach, avid supporter of the Wellington Phoenix football team, real ale fan, and a keen swimmer.
Kevin Flynn is currently sub-principal First Violin with the BBC Philharmonic, a post he has held for nearly 13 years.
As part of the BBC Philharmonic he appears regularly in Manchester, at the BBC Proms and abroad. Prior to joining the BBC, Kevin freelanced with the Halle, Manchester Camerata and the Ulster Orchestra. He has also guested with numerous orchestras and ensembles in recent years including English National Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Teatro Regio in Turin and Sinfonia Viva.
He is also a member of Gianandrea Noseda’s Stresa Festival Orchestra. In addition to his orchestral work Kevin is a highly active chamber musician and an increasingly in demand coach and teacher. He studied with Catherine Yates at Chetham’s School of Music and later with Yossi Zivoni at the Royal Northern College of Music.
VaCO is also one of the most sociable courses I've ever attended and gives some amazing chamber music opportunities. I first started attending the Christmas course and enjoyed them and the evening / late night chamber music sessions so much that I've been back ever since. These chamber music sessions also help cement friendships that can last for years, provide contacts with the professional world and make connections which are vital to succeeding in today's musical world as well as allowing you to play some amazing music - Schubert cello quintet and the Mendelssohn Octet spring to mind alongside a complete Vaughan-Williams chamber music marathon one evening.
