Peter Dykes

 

 

Peter Dykes, born in North Yorkshire, studied oboe under Stephane Rancourt and Stephen West at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, graduating in 2000. During his time in Scotland, he made regular guest appearances with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Peter was also a member of the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, touring extensively in Europe and America, and has made concerto performances with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the European Union Chamber Orchestra.

For three years he held the position of solo oboe in the Slovenia National Theatre Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and has also played with the Slovenia Radio Television Symphony Orchestra and Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2003, he was appointed to the position of Principal Oboe with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, where he was also oboe professor at the University of Canterbury and the Pettman Junior Academy of Music.

In 2010 Peter moved to Wellington to take up the position of Associate Principal Oboe with the NZSO.  He is also a member of the Wellington contemporary music group Stroma.

From July 2017 Peter has been appointed Associate Principal Oboe with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra – so he and his wife, Jill, will be heading back to Glasgow!

Away from the oboe, Peter is a junior football coach, avid supporter of the Wellington Phoenix football team, real ale fan, and a keen swimmer.

 

David Aspin

 

 

David Aspin studied at the Royal College of Music with Roger Best and Simon Rowland Jones.  He is a founder member of the highly acclaimed chamber group, Chroma, resident at Royal Holloway, University of London.  The group has forged an enviable reputation for its commissioning of new work, collaborations and education work.  His work with chamber groups such as Psappha include performances at the BBC Proms, concerts in Buenos Aires and Lisbon, as well as regularly recording for CD, radio and webcasts.

As a soloist, David has performed in the UK and overseas including the RNCM’s Turnage Festival, Mozart in Gstaad, Switzerland, Three Choirs Festival and a recital/masterclass for the New Zealand National Music Teacher’s Association.

David has performed and recorded the Telemann viola concerto with the Lancashire Sinfonietta.  Other concerto appearances include works by Bartok, Berlioz, Britten, Bruch and Vaughan Williams.  In 2013 David performed the Walton concerto with the Orchestra of Opera North.

David is principal violist of the Orchestra of Opera North.  He has also appeared as guest principal of the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé, Royal Scottish National, Bournemouth Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC NOW, BBC Scottish Symphony, Philharmonia and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestras.

David is a viola tutor at the RNCM and a regular sectional coach at Chetham’s and NYO.

 

I look back on my years as a member of VaCO with very happy memories - one of my formative experiences as a young musician. Great coaching, chamber music and concerto opportunities, all bound together in wonderfully supportive and friendly atmosphere.
