Vacation Chamber Orchestra(VaCO) was set up to provide development opportunities for some of the country’s talented musicians giving them experience to play together and to promote high-quality orchestral and chamber concerts in rural North Yorkshire, concentrating on the Yorkshire Dales. The students are challenged with repertoire that is difficult to play but wonderful to listen to; a win-win for all concerned.

VaCO has been running for nearly 25 years in the North of England and many students have gone on to play for some of the major orchestras around such as BBC Philharmonic, LSO, Halle, Ulster, RSNO, RLPO, Opera North, Manchester Camerata, Ulster & RTE as well as many other wonderful international, chamber ensembles.

This summer, the students have been tutored by eminent & exciting exponents in their field –  Tim Lowe – Recitalist, Guest leader of Cellos for English Chamber Orchestra & many other leading UK Orchestras & Meyrick Alexander – Former Head of Wind at RWCMD, previous Principal Bassoon of Philharmonia Orchestra London.

Yorkshire’s own Xenophon Kelsey who has  been conducting, lecturing, teaching and playing for nearly 50 years and who was the brainchild behind VaCO said: “Over Summer time, we shall be performing our concerts right across the Dales once again. The gems of the Chamber Orchestra repertoire –  exquisite music for you all to experience!”

I played orchestral piano/continuo harpsichord & organ for VaCO for several courses and was given a fantastic opportunity to play Ravel's piano concerto a few years later on a Christmas course. The courses themselves are thoroughly enjoyable, I've worked with fantastic musicians (students and professionals - many of whom I still work with today!) and have also made some friends who I still see regularly, not just from the UK but all over the world. Anyone would enjoy themselves in such a great atmosphere and if you get the chance to do one of the courses don't miss the opportunity!
